A technical study certifies the stability of the 16th century building, although a plague of termites will have to be tackled
The technical commission in charge of the recovery of the old convent of San José de las Madres Carmelitas since its acquisition by the Autonomous Community met yesterday at the Town Hall of Caravaca de la Cruz to take stock of the work carried out to date and agree on the actions that will take place in the coming months in this historic building. A technical study of the pathologies and structural analysis of the building carried out by the Polytechnic University of Valencia certifies the “good general stability” of the convent complex of San José de las Madres Carmelitas Descalzas, founded by order of Santa Teresa de Jesús at the end of the 16th century .
Among the future actions, the repair work on the roofs based on a project already drafted, with a budget of 550,000 euros, stands out. To this work will be added the restoration of the main façade and the church of San José. Previously, an intervention will be materialized for the control and eradication of termites, through a project that will be tendered imminently by the Tourism Institute of the Region of Murcia with a budget of 17,000 euros.
The mayor of Caravaca, José Francisco García, and the director of the Regional Institute of Tourism, Juan Francisco Martínez, chaired the meeting of the commission and at the end, the councilor stressed that “work is being done for a year, with great sensitivity in a building of great historical value, direct foundation of Santa Teresa, to which the people of Caravaca have an immense affection». In the line of improvements, in the coming months an ideas competition will be held to define the future services that the property will house.
