Many will think that it no longer exists, but it is still there. The PRD today tries to transform itself into a social democratic party. This is a desperate attempt to prevent his disappearance. It is proposed to abandon its condition of radical left, to go over to social democracy. That is, no longer seek power through class struggle, but through promoting changes in institutions.
The reality shows the total failure of his previous political strategy. The PRD-PRI-PAN electoral alliance was not a good decision for the party of the Aztec sun. At the national level, in 2006 he obtained 29% of the total vote, but in the 2018 election he only achieved 2.8%. From having had 158 federal deputies, today it only has 12. From having 36 senators, it went to 3.
In the case of Sinaloa, the PRD’s greatest electoral achievement occurred in 1994, when it obtained 13.3% of the vote, that is, almost 120,000 votes. But in the 2021 process, he received just under 20,000 votes, representing 1.78% of the total votes cast. These data show that their participation in the electoral alliance has massacred the electoral expectations of the PRD.
Its main management cadres and a very high percentage of its militants are currently part of Morena. Because of this, some analysts warn that in the 2024 election, it will definitely lose its registration as a political party. It is doomed to disappear. In 15 states of the country it has already lost its registration for not having reached 3% of the votes cast.
To try to counteract this cruel reality, and try to grow electorally, the PRD modified its declaration of principles to, from now on, assume itself ideologically as a social democratic party. But this apparent magic formula that you have chosen will hardly bring the good results that are expected.
Currently, in the international arena, social democracy is not experiencing its best moment as an ideological current. It is a fact that Russia’s war against Ukraine is changing not only the world economy, but also the set of prevailing political ideas up to now.
Currently the countries with clearly social democratic governments are Finland, Sweden, Denmark and to a certain extent also Spain. Others like France, Germany and Italy, long ago abandoned this ideological current. What happened in Ukraine will make the countries that are still social democrats quickly move away from everything that smells or looks like socialism.
Social democracy is no longer an option for government, and citizens now avoid voting for parties that uphold that ideology. This trend is clearly observed in Europe, but also in other latitudes. So, in Mexico, the PRD is late to join this political ideology. It will continue to be immersed in its own labyrinth of partisan confusion and deterioration. It will be another failure.
