The PP has voted in favor of studying the idea of creating migrant deportation centers outside the EUsimilar to those established by the Italian far-right Giorgia Meloni in Albania.
The Spanish conservatives have supported, together with the European People’s Party this idea and others amendments to toughen immigration policy. They are considering creating these centers and “if necessary” allocating “adequate financing to the project.” In addition, they demand greater funds to strengthen “physical barriers” at European borders.
This Wednesday, the European Commission (EC) stated that it will continue to explore the idea of creating migrant deportation centers in non-EU countries. European Union as a formula for increase returns of people who do not see the right to remain in the community area recognized.
“Some Member States are asking to explore possible ways forward on solutions, such as the idea of developing deportation centers outside the EU,” said the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, in a debate on migration held in the European Parliament.
“The Commission will continue to explore possible ways forward regarding the idea of developing deportation centers outside the Union, especially in view of a legislative proposal on returns,” he added.
He specified that “important attention will be paid to respect for fundamental rights when considering measures such as deportation centers” and said that he is in contact with organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees “to ensure that international law and the principle of non-refoulement are always respected in all cases”.
The politician spoke out in this sense after last week the president of the EC, Ursula von der Leyensent a letter to the leaders of the Twenty-Seven in which he asked to “continue exploring” to advance the idea of developing deportation centers outside the EU and calling for lessons to be drawn from the implementation of the agreement between Italy and Albania.
The PP MEP Dolors Montserrat assured that the southern border of Europe, in reference to the Spanish Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, “is at serious risk of collapse in the face of the constant arrival of irregular immigrants”.
“The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are the three regions that receive the most irregular immigration today in all of Europe, and it is not by chance. They are because the Government of Spain does not defend our borders or our security forces, it evades international cooperation, it ignores Europe and despises Frontex’s help,” he commented.
From VoxJorge Buxadé called for “against illegal immigration, deportation” and “against mass immigration, mass deportations.”
For its part, since AddEstrella Galán said that “build prisons for refugees in Europe it is barbaric.” “Concentration camps for human beings whose only crime has been to flee to save their lives. The president of social democratic groupIratxe García Pérez, assured that his party will not allow Von der Leyen’s letter on deportation centers to “bury” the recently agreed European migration pact.
