The motion of censure promoted by the Peruvian right and far right to remove the president, Pedro Castillo, failed as it did not obtain enough votes in Congress on Tuesday night (early morning in Spain) to be admitted for processing. The initiative was thus shelved to the relief of the president by reaping only 46 votes in the plenary – at least 52 were needed to approve it -, compared to 76 votes against and four abstentions.
Castillo, who has been in power for four months, saw how conservative sectors that still do not recognize the legitimacy of his electoral victory made their first attempt to strip him of the Presidency. The head of state, however, will be able to breathe easy for at least three months since next week Parliament goes into recess until March and until then it will not be possible to promote his dismissal again.
The motion sought to declare Castillo’s “permanent moral incapacity” for allegedly having exerted pressure in order to irregularly promote his relatives in the Armed Forces, reports Efe. This has been the fifth initiative of its kind presented in Parliament in the last four years. Two of them, however, managed to end the terms of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018) and Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020).
