On the occasion of the misfortune that has accompanied the last DANAultra populism has spread the misleading version of an apparently positive phrase, inviting solidarity action and collective hope: only the people save the people, they say.
The problem is in that “alone”, because it seeks to contrast people and politics, people and institutions, in a sweet meaning of the most traditional calls against the “failed State”, in favor of “the national revolt” and the vindication of the “ authentic saviors”, which they have also put into circulation.
Under the guise of paying tribute to the laudable generosity of thousands and thousands of good people in helping their fellow human beings, the ultra spokesmen try to channel the logical frustration and anger of these days against democratic politics, its institutions and its protagonists.
Politics, you either do it or they do it to you. But there is always politics. When one presumes not to do politics, that is when the most politics is done, and when that policy is most dangerous for the majority.
They intend to denounce, first, that democratic politics has done nothing for the people, and they seek to convince, second, that aid has come exclusively from the bare hands of good private patriots.
But the reality is that the people have once again saved the people in Valencia, through Governments.
It has been the people, of course, but the people democratically organized through their institutions, through their central, regional and local administrations, through their Armed forcesthrough his National Police and his Civil Guardthrough its firefighters and its municipal agents, through its officials, its councilors, its mayors, its counselors, its ministers, its presidents, its parliamentarians…
Every crane, every truck, every extraction pump, every open road, every repaired road, every restored train, every recovered infrastructure, has had democratic politics behind it, with presence, work, effort, decisions, resources… With errors and delays, also, that they do not take away the other.
The volunteers, the Red Crossthe social organizations, the neighborhood entities, the companies that have intervened from civil society itself, did so laudably, yes, with the management and generally with the resources provided by the democratic institutions, by the present, active and not failed State. .
Behind a good part of the spokespersons for “only the people save the people” is anti-politics. Which in reality is also a tricky expression. Because those who profess and advocate anti-politics are, really, doing politics, their particular politics, in accordance with their ideas and their particular interests.
Every crane, every truck, every extraction pump, every road opened, every road repaired, every train restored, every infrastructure recovered, has had democratic politics behind it.
Because politics is nothing more than the discipline that organizes shared public space. Politics is inevitable, inescapable. It is always present. Politics can be done for one purpose or another, in one way or another, with the people and for the people, or without them and against them.
Politics, you either do it or they do it to you. But there is always politics. When one presumes not to do politics, that is when the most politics is done, that is when the true purpose of the politics that is made is most hidden and, therefore, when that policy is most dangerous for the majority.
Those who drive frustration and anger against politics do politics from certain values and in accordance with specific objectives. Which are not the values of democratic politics, of freedom, of equality, of solidarity, of social justice. And they are not the objectives of general interest.
The people will continue to save the people, hand in hand with their representatives and their democratic institutions, always with insufficiencies and difficulties, and always in a position to improve.
Those who will not save the people, because they have never saved them, are those who set themselves up as saviors, when they only seek to save themselves.
