Who was José Olaya?
The date of birth of José Silverio Olaya Balandra It is an enigma, because some historians give different dates and we only speak of years. These can be 1782 or 1795. In addition, there was controversy with their surnames.
From humble and hard-working parents, since childhood he worked as a fisherman in the town of San Pedro de Chorrillos. Many say that he was an excellent swimmer. This is the reason for his prowess as a liberator.
It was in the struggle for independence that José Olaya immortalized himself, transporting from Chorrillos to Lima, by sea, missives that Antonio José de Sucre needed to give to the patriots at the other end in order to know the movements of the royalists.

On June 27, 1823, Olaya was discovered carrying a letter, and more messages, from Sucre to Narciso de Colina (a patriot from Lima). Before being imprisoned, José threw the writings into a ditch; however, others mention that he ate them.
He never gave any information or betrayed his colleagues. They tortured him before shooting him in a passage that today bears his name. This is in the surroundings of the Plaza Mayor in Lima.
