The Plenary of Organization of the City of Viveiro (Lugo), which will be held next week, will take as the main point of the agenda, after passing through the Economic Commission, the salary remuneration of the new mayor, Mariña Gueimunde, of the Popular Party, which will set a remuneration of 59,000 euros per year.
This salary represents 35% more than what the previous governor, the socialist María Loureiro, charged, which was 43,500 euros. The measure will be ratified in the plenary vote by the two councilors of Viveiro, as announced in the commission, according to Europa Press.
Together with the mayor, there will be another sole exclusive dedication, that of the Councilor for Works, Parks and Xardíns, Vicente Vázquez Chao, which will charge 25,000 euros, a figure much lower than the 41,000 received by the nationalist Míriam Bermúdez, and that represents 39% less.
Together, both salaries are 84,000 euros, an amount somewhat lower than their two predecessors. “Because our idea is to stay within the budget, we have not uploaded a euro,” explained the mayor, who has received criticism for this high salary and that has justified the decision, “based on what the law marks.”
He has assured that the salary of the mayors is defined according to the number of inhabitants. “And I subscribe to that,” he said, in addition to adding that there is “consensus with my party partner.” Gueimunde, who is a high school teacher, was holding the position of territorial director at the Ministry of Mar de Celeiro.
María Loureiro and Míriam Bermúdez announced the intention of refraining, since, “although they remain within the total budget” they consider “totally disproportionate that salary”, in the words of Loureiro, which was separated from the Mayor’s Office through a motion of censure. He clarified the former mayor that Viveiro “is a great town and has many services that need to be attended, but a more balanced cast could be made.”
Next week Gueimunde will also announce the distribution of areas for this new government that has just begun, since everyone will have an area in which they will work.
The direction of the PPDEG does not question the rise
To media questions this Friday, at a press conference in the Autonomous Chamber, the PPDEG parliamentary spokesman, Alberto Pazos Couñago, has assured “ignoring” both the remuneration to be set by the new mayor of Viveiro and what were the income of the previous one.
In any case, he recalled that there are “specified salary limits for municipalities” and added that, “while fulfilling law”, he sees no problem. Moreover, he stressed that it is an issue to analyze from a “global” perspective (in relation to the total government budget for salaries).
“I don’t know what is the cost of one government and another. What I am sure of is that the investment that is fonts in that salary cost will be much more profitable for its neighbors,” he said.
Beyond, he has referred to local autonomy and has assured that he “no” has been heard to judge “the salary that any mayor puts in any municipality of Galicia.”
