The municipal housing stock will add 458 affordable rental apartments for young people. The project, forged during the mandate of socialist mayor José Antonio Serrano, will be completed within two years, after the Government Board took the first step yesterday. Approved the procedure by which the City Council accepts the subsidy granted by the Autonomous Community, from the European 'Next Generation' funds, which will allow the construction of these rental homes at affordable prices in six districts and two neighborhoods of the city.
The project, called 'Murcia Crece', has an investment of 63.7 million euros (of which 22.6 million come from European funds) and is the result of an agreement signed between the Government of Spain and the Autonomous Community. To get it started, the City Council has reserved a dozen municipal plots where ten buildings will be built in areas with high real estate demand, such as the districts of Cabezo de Torres, La Alberca, El Palmar, Santiago and Zaraíche, Churra and El Puntal, as well as the neighborhoods of Ronda Sur and San Basilio. “This initiative is a strategic axis within our city model, which will mean a territorial balance and an economic boost for the municipality, especially in the areas where the homes are going to be built, which are in high demand,” as highlighted by the spokesperson for the local executive, Rebeca Pérez. She announced that the forecast is for the 458 homes to be completed in December 2026.
“A socialist initiative”
«With the strategic project 'Murcia Crece', the City Council will create a public rental housing system in the municipality, but we also seek to achieve territorial balance in urban growth through different initiatives that involve both the promotion of rentals and for the constitution of housing cooperatives on public land. An example of this is the first cooperative that has been launched in the district of Puente Tocinos under the name 'Aire' and whose 26 homes have already been put up for sale and are in the process of searching for partners,” added Rebeca Pérez. .
From the Socialist Municipal Group they recalled that this housing project for rental was launched by the previous mayor, José Antonio Serrano, in January 2023. «We are very happy that they are taking on a socialist project, largely financed by the Government. of Spain, with the aim of facilitating access to housing,” said the spokesperson, Ginés Ruiz Maciá. In that presentation it was announced that the rental price would range between 350 and 500 euros.
