To the 6,000 images already processed, another 10,000 negatives are now added that narrate moments of the municipality’s future in past decades
The Municipal Archive of Murcia continues with its digitization work as part of its function of preserving the rich heritage it treasures. On this occasion, it is the turn of the Foto López photographic collection, which will involve the digitization and subsequent printing of 10,000 negatives. This digital conservation project, promoted by the Department of Culture, is being coordinated by the Photographic Research Laboratory of the University of Murcia (LIFUM), with the Doctor in History of Art, curator and photographer, Fernando Vázquez Casillas, at the head of a team of professional experts in historical photography.
With this new impetus, progress continues in the recovery, safeguarding and dissemination of municipal heritage. The Councilor for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex, highlighted the great value of the documents that are being digitized in this new process and thanked the López family, during a recent visit to the Municipal Archives, “the gesture of sharing with everyone the Murcians a material that enriches our heritage».
The photographic archive of the Juan López collection was acquired by the Murcia City Council in 1995, and deposited in the Municipal Archive of Murcia. More than 6,000 negatives on various themes (football, festivals, towns, the city…) are currently digitized and positive, some of which are part of the tribute-exhibition that took place at Fundación Cajamurcia in 2014 coinciding with its centenary, as well as other small exhibitions that allowed the extraordinary work of this great Murcian photojournalist to be disseminated and known.
