The month of September began in Spain with several storms passing through the north of the peninsula, maintaining high pressures in the south, favoring the entry into the Region of Murcia of warm and dry air masses, with temperatures much higher than normal and a of breezes As of the 10th, the winds shifted to the east and, between the 12th and 14th, a deep storm moved further south, affecting the Region of Murcia with a drop in temperature, some rainfall and intervals of strong lift. This is indicated by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the report prepared for the last month.
During the following days, clear skies and breezes prevailed, until on the 18th a storm settled over the Portuguese coasts and brought instability to the atmosphere of the Region, with storms and strong winds. The storm finished passing on the 23rd and, after a couple of days of stability, on the 25th another storm generated storms of great intensity, thermal drop and strong elevation on the coast. After this and a few days with a stable atmosphere, the month ended with the passage of a cold front, some precipitation and strong intervals of the west.
The average monthly temperature for September in the Region of Murcia was 23.6ºC with an anomaly of +1.8ºC with respect to the reference period, and a very warm thermometric character. This month of September was the fourth warmest on record, since 1961, along with 1983 and 1990, and is the warmest of the 21st century.
Maximum temperatures contributed to a greater extent to the very hot nature of the month, with an average of 30.0ºC and an anomaly of +2.0ºC, being the fifth highest in September in the last 62 years, and the highest in the 21st century. The average September temperature at the Murcia and Alcantarilla observatories, 26.5ºC and 26.1ºC respectively, was the highest in their respective series of 39 and 81 years, surpassing previous ephemeris. The average of the maximum temperatures in the Cartagena station, which was 29.8ºC, exceeded the previous ephemeris, 29.7ºC, corresponding to September 1990.
Another aspect of the behavior of the temperatures in September was the very high maximum of the first 12 days. Subsequently, coinciding with the first rainfall of the month, the maximum fell on days 12 and 13, to recover later and reach values closer to normal.
The minimum temperatures were also above normal until the 27th, highlighting the increase on the 12th and 13th, exceeding on this last day the ephemeris of the highest minimum temperature for a month of September in numerous stations in the Region. This was the case of the Murcia and Alcantarilla observatories, whose minimums on the 13th, 25.8ºC and 24.7ºC respectively, exceeded the previous ephemeris (25.0ºC on September 5, 2009 at the Murcia observatory and 24, 6 ºC on September 1, 2015 in Alcantarilla).
The highest maximum temperatures were observed on the 9th, registering the monthly absolute maximum in Archena, with 38.1ºC, that same day. The lowest maximums were recorded on the 30th, with only 18.3ºC in Benizar, Moratalla.
The highest minimum temperatures were recorded on the 13th, the highest minimum being 26.9ºC, recorded in Cartagena. The lowest minimum temperatures were observed on the 30th, the absolute minimum for the month being 8.6ºC in Los Royos, Caravaca, on that day.
