Like the previous months, last March was the fourth warmest in the historical series in the Region of Murcia. That is, at least since 1961. In addition, the period of the hydrological year between October and March remains the driest since there are records, according to the Monthly Climatological Advance of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The average monthly temperature in the Region of Murcia was 13.8 degrees, which is 1.7 degrees above the average value. Only three months of March exceed this year's damage: the 15.2 degrees recorded in 2001, 14.8 in 2023, and 14.4 in 1981.
The maximum temperatures, with an average of 19.9 degrees, were 2 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperatures exceeded the average by 1.4ºC and remained at 7.7 degrees. In the evolution of maximum temperatures, Aemet highlighted the warm episode from the 12th to the 23rd, with days 18 and 19 being the most intense, with regional averages around 28 degrees.
The storms, insufficient
Regarding rainfall, the average was 17.8 liters per square meter, which represents 59% of the median value for the reference period, leaving this month of March as the seventh driest of the 21st century. That is to say, not even the Easter storms were enough to alleviate the scarce rainfall data that has been repeated in recent months.
The accumulated rainfall in the Region from October 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024 amounts to 43.4 liters per square meter, which is barely a quarter of the average value for the same period.
