The mayor of Ripoll and leader of Aliança Catalana, Sílvia Orriols, lost this Thursday the motion of confidence that she herself had called after failing to approve the Budgets, with the only votes in favor of its formation (6) and the votes against the entire opposition –Junts (3), ERC (3), PSC (2), CUP (2) and Som-hi Ripoll (1)–.
«I do not present that question of trust to lose office. I present it to unclog the municipal budget and be able to continue governing,” Orriols defended before the plenary vote.
Orriols raised the motion of confidence after this Monday the entire opposition rejected his budget project for 2025 and, having lost it, the opposition groups have 30 days to form an alternative government (which requires an absolute majority of the plenary session).
Otherwise, Orriols would remain in office and the budgets would be approved automatically. unlike what happened last yearwhen the mayor opted for an extension instead of approving new accounts.
Orriols has criticized that the groups have received pressure from the leaders of ERC and Junts, Oriol Junqueras and Carles Puigdemont, respectively, to vote against the bills: “The people already know that this is not about budgets, this is about snatching my rod.”
Likewise, he has assured that the budget presented is “worthy” and guarantees quality services, and has rejected the possibility of proposing a budget extension.
During the plenary session, the councilors have voted one by one and out loud the motion of confidence and, after Orriols’ speech, they have defended their position, except for ERC, which has decided not to intervene.
Junts councilor Maria Soldevila has criticized that Orriols always wants to impose his criteriawhich prevents him from reaching agreements with the rest of the municipal groups, and the PSC councilor Enric Pérez has regretted that he did not want to take into account his amendments to the Budgets: “The rules of the game and the board are clear.”
For the CUP-Alternativa per Ripoll councilor Daniel Vilaseca, the accounts presented by Orriols do not respond to “the real needs” of the residents, and the Som-hi Ripoll councilor Joaquim Colomer has stated that the current municipal government has not managed the city’s problems.
