The court grades give another twist at the Polytechnic, with 15% more applications, and are contained and even drop slightly in Murcia after years of rising
The cut-off marks to achieve a place in one of the degrees with a limit of positions taught by the University of Murcia (UMU) are barely contained this year with slight decreases (barely hundredths in most cases), after two courses – those of the pandemic – with outstanding increases that reached a ceiling last year, with the highest grades in history. The escalation has slowed down this year at the UMU, although not so much at the Polytechnic of Cartagena, which has raised the access grade in most of the titles it teaches.
The two public universities of the Region have registered this year an overwhelming demand for places never known, which exceeds the offer of degrees. The pull in demand in this first phase of the process, which must now be specified with enrollment, is not limited to the regional level: thousands of students from other communities have applied for their position in the two institutions, with a level of requests even higher than local.
No fewer than 21,075 students have pre-registered for first choice degrees at the UMU and UPCT, 600 more than last year. Those students compete with their qualifications for 7,961 places, a quota similar to last year. Of the total requests for places, more than 12,000 are from students from other autonomous communities, who among the entire range of Spanish campuses have marked Murcia’s public universities as their first option to pursue their higher studies.
The interest of students from other communities to study in the Region is notorious: 12,084 requests are foreign
The boost in demand benefits the two public universities, and although the figures are much higher at the UMU, it is proportionally more pronounced at the UPCT, which this year saw an increase in applications for first-choice places of 14.5 %, going from 1,178 last year to 1,345 presented this June. An increase that is added to that registered last year, when the requests for places from students interested in studying at the Polytechnic of Cartagena already increased by nearly 20%. After years of losing new students due to the crisis in technical degrees that has affected all of Spain, the UPCT consolidates its success in demand, driven largely by new degrees, such as Data Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. For the Polytechnic University, the good figures are due to outreach work during the last years of the ‘Stem’ degrees among Baccalaureate students, and specifically among women.
The ‘bubble’ generated by the facilities of the pandemic seems to have begun to deflate after reaching a ceiling
The success of the demand for places in technical degrees has been reflected in the cut-off marks, which have risen in most degrees. The highest qualification is required to enter Biomedical Engineering, which requires an average of 12.9. The new degree in Data Science and Engineering, taught by the two universities, asks for a 11.71 (in Murcia the minimum qualification required is higher, 12.6), and the double degrees of Biomedical and Industrial Electronics and Automatic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design and Product Development are above 12.
At the University of Murcia, pre-registration for one of the 6,821 new admission places for undergraduate studies offered this year also increased significantly, going from 19,310 last year to 19,730 registered this year. The interest of students from all over Spain to continue their university studies at the UMU is very strong: 11,467 students from other districts have requested a place at the University of Murcia as their first option, almost 800 more than last year, a fact that the institution attributes to the prestige and recognition of the institution in various areas of knowledge. The other 8,263 requests are from students in the Region, somewhat less than last year, but in any case well above supply, limited by funding.
The cut-off grades of the UMU, which last year exceeded all records, barely rose –many grades even dropped a few hundredths–, but the truth is that the most demanded titles were at levels that did not admit further increases. Above the 13 out of 14 minimum required (that is the note of the last student who has entered) many of the degrees in the health branch, sciences and double degrees are maintained. It must be taken into account that, although the bubble of high grades due to the relaxation of the pandemic seems to have begun to deflate, in the process this year students continue to compete who last year and the previous year did not achieve a place in the desired title and They keep trying to improve their average.
Almost 4,000 applications for 200 positions in Medicine
He continues to lead the ‘top ten’ of degrees with the most demand in the Medicine Region, which has been the first option for 3,937 students, who compete for 200 places. In Nursing, 1,816 applications have been registered, 246 more than a year ago; and the double degree in Mathematics and Physics, which offers 10 places, has received 103 pre-registrations. The highest cut-off marks, above 13 out of 14, are those of Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Mathematics, Medicine, Dentistry and the double degrees of Mathematics and Computer Engineering and Mathematics and Physics. They are followed by those of Nursing, Physics, Physiotherapy, Chemistry, Veterinary and the doubles ADE and Law, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Children and Primary. At the Polytechnic, the first cut-off grades (there are still several lists to be published) leave higher cut-off grades in 15 of the 20 degrees offered, and three titles with a minimum grade above 12.
