The works, which require diverting part of the traffic along the Purias highway, affect 4 kilometers of the route and cost 660,000 euros
The Ministry of Public Works has begun work on the renovation and conditioning of the pavement in a four-kilometre section of the Águilas expressway, the RM-11, in the direction of Lorca, with a budget of 660,000 euros. During the three months that the works are expected to last, designed to improve the safety and comfort of the highway between kilometer points 10 and 14, the vehicles will be diverted along the Purias highway.
The director general of Highways, María Casajús, who supervised the work yesterday, explained that a type of semi-hot mixture is used for asphalting, which allows the temperature to be lowered by around 20 degrees in the manufacturing process, which contributes to energy savings the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. She added that organic and polymeric additives such as waste from out-of-use tires and plastics are used in the manufacture of the mixture, although “the most innovative thing is the reuse of milling waste” from the old road surface itself.
According to Casajús, it is the first time that this type of composition has been used in the asphalting of a fast road and its application will save 20,000 liters of fuel. He explained that the goal of his department is that “our roads are green and safe.”
The RM-11 is used daily by more than 8,500 users on their journeys between Lorca and Águilas, and by workers who access the many companies and agricultural and livestock operations in the area. The works in progress will contribute to improving visibility thanks to the cleaning and formation of new ditches, berms and slopes to prevent the growth of weeds. The metal containment barrier will also be increased in the necessary sections as a result of the elevation of the road grade and a longitudinal concrete drainage curb will be placed to replace the existing one. The improvement works also include the repainting of all the elements of the section.
His department is also carrying out the expansion of the El Mesillo highway, which connects Lorca with the coast through Campo López, the RMD-8, whose works began in June and have reached its equator. “We are advancing at a very good pace”, confirmed Casajús. They affect the section between kilometer points 8 to 12 and have a budget of 1.5 million euros.
The City Council will begin in the coming weeks the conditioning of the RM-C9 and RM-503 roads that converge in the district of Zarzadilla de Totana on a 6.5-kilometre route. It was confirmed by the Councilor for Local Development, Isabel Casalduero, since they will be executed by the Consistory with a grant from the Government of Murcia of 3.4 million euros.
