Cruz Azul's start in the Clausura 2024 tournament of Liga MX has not been as expected. The Celeste Machine has a draw and a defeat in the first two games of Martín Anselmi's time as head of the club.
On the third day of the competition, the La Noria team will face Mazatlán FC at the Azulgrana Stadium. On paper, Cruz Azul comes out as a slight favorite, but its recent performance leaves open the possibility of another setback.
This is how the Celeste Machine would line up for the duel on matchday 3 of Clausura 2024:
Goalkeeper: Kevin Mier – The Colombian arrived as a reinforcement for this season and in his first presentations he has shown himself to be a player with excellent reflexes who is capable of providing security between the three sticks.
Right back: Ignacio Rivero – The versatile Uruguayan player has been enabled by Anselmi as a right back. Rivero is skilled in recovering balls and distributing the game, providing balance to the team.
Central defender: Willer Ditta – Without a doubt, the defense is the most fragile line of the Machine. Ditta is a solid defender with an imposing physique, but he has seemed very insecure at the start of this season.
Central defender: Gonzalo Piovi – The Argentine defender is one of Anselmi's bets for this semester. So far not much has been seen of the defender who arrived from Racing de Avellaneda
Left back: Camilo Cándido – The Uruguayan is a fast and technical winger. He stands out for his ability to join the attack and generate danger on the wing, although at a defensive level he is not the best element.
Central midfielder: Erik Lira – Lira is a midfielder whose first responsibility on the field is to destroy the rivals' play and recover balls. His performance as a celestial player has gone from more to less since his arrival.
Central midfielder: Carlos Rodríguez – 'Charly' Rodríguez has lowered his level steadily in recent tournaments. The Rayados youth player needs to return to being the leader he was when he arrived at La Noria.
Attacking midfielder: Lorenzo Faravelli – The Argentine/Ecuadorian midfielder arrived at Cruz Azul at the request of Ansemi. He has given sparks of game vision and creativity, but so far he remains in debt.
Right winger: Uriel Antuna – Antuna was the Machine's most consistent player over the last year. This start to the tournament, like the entire blue squad, is having a hard time. Antuna stands out for his ability to unbalance one-on-one and his ability to score and assist.
Left winger: Carlos Rotondi – The Argentine disputes ownership with Rodrigo Huescas. Although Rotondi is usually very supportive in defensive work, he is not a winger who has stood out for his ability to create scoring opportunities or face up.
Center forward: Gabriel Fernández – 'Toro' is a striker with a scoring instinct, but he has shown failure in front of the goal in his first duels as a Cruz Azul player.
