‘Umbrella’, ‘table’, ‘wire’, ‘lira’, or ‘trumpet’ have their definition ‘lotra’ in the dictionary of the Spanish language for two years
Like every December 22, words such as ‘1lambre’, ‘copa’, ‘lira’, ‘umbrellas’, ‘tabla’, ‘tolva’ and ‘trumpetta’ are once again the protagonists. Millions of people hear classic words that have become part of our life’s vocabulary thanks to the Christmas Lottery. Since 2019, the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), incorporated them with their new meanings in the update of the dictionary of the Spanish language.
All these words have a lottery meaning that can be consulted in the academic dictionary. In addition, terms such as ‘chapel’ or ‘postero / ra’, linked to the popular National Lottery for more than two centuries, also have their place in the Dictionary of the Spanish language (DLE).
The dictionary contains about 1,500 words related to the game and 70 words with a specific brand for the Lottery. Although the word that everyone hopes to be able to say on December 22 is Gordo, which designates the first prize of the Extraordinary draw of the Christmas Lottery 2020 and which distributes four million euros per series, that is, 400,000 euros the tenth.
All these meanings specify if the word is used in lotteries of “some countries” or specifically in the Spanish lottery and while the ‘chapel’ is the final model of a tenth in which a number of the draw has not yet been printed, the ‘ table ‘is the display case where the balls of the winning numbers and their corresponding prizes are shown. Furthermore, the only article addition has been that of ‘postero’ or ‘postera’, which refers to the ‘person who was in charge of a lottery position’.
Christmas Lottery 2021: Gordo, the most desired word
But there are other words that have already been established in our vocabulary and that have lottery meanings such as ‘tenth’, the tenth part of a ticket, the price of which is 20 euros; ‘participation’, which is when tickets are divided into shares; ‘pedrea’, which are the smallest prizes of the Christmas Lottery, but also the most numerous (they consist of 1,000 euros divided into 10 tenths). Another word widely used is ‘reimbursement’, which refers to when the winners recover what they have played if their ticket has the same ending as the Gordo.
