Most often, icicles form in February and March, but there are exceptions. This was announced on Wednesday, December 8, by the head of the department of short-term weather forecasts and hazardous phenomena in Russia at the Hydrometeorological Center, Alexander Golubev.
According to him, dangerous icicles may appear on the roofs of houses at the beginning of winter.
“Icicles are usually actively formed at the end of winter, that is, in February and March, but they also occur at the beginning of winter. At this time, they appear, because the roofs of houses are warm and snow melts on them, and then water flows down, forming an icicle in the cold. The main factors are the presence of snow on the roofs of houses and temperature drops, “- explained the forecaster in an interview with radio Sputnik…
Golubev noted that all large icicles are dangerous for humans, since they can come off and fall down.
“To avoid the formation of large icicles, you just need to clean the roofs in time. Yes, in Moscow, snow on the roof is nonsense, but everyone has to clean it everywhere, ”the expert concluded.
On February 9, in the Moscow region, a child suffered from an icicle that fell from the roof of a house. An incident occurred in Elektrostal near one of the houses on Lenin Avenue: an icicle fell from the roof of a house on a 12-year-old boy, as a result of which he was injured.
The city prosecutor’s office establishes the reasons and circumstances of the incident.
