Institutions and companies from various parts of Spain choose municipal facilities for their summer camps
In a large room in the Puntas de Calnegre municipal shelter, fifteen young people and adults draw and mold clay with their hands. A few meters away, on the beach, the rest of the group plays in the water. They are all part of the camp organized by Educnatur, a Madrid company that manages leisure activities for people with functional diversity and that this month has reserved the facility. During August, more than 60 participants and 20 monitors, divided into two fortnights, will carry out all kinds of excursions and games both on the beaches of Lorca and in nearby municipalities. Speaking to this newspaper, the monitors value, mainly, the accessibility of the building, a priority when choosing an establishment for this type of program. Educnatur’s initiative is one of the many meetings that are taking place this season in the three municipal shelters in Lorca, located in the districts of Culebrina (Casa Iglesias) and Coy (Casa Grande), along with the aforementioned Calnegre.
According to Andrés Abellaneda, director of El Molino, the company in charge of managing these spaces, the degree of occupancy and the number of activities carried out this summer period exceed the figures for 2019, a year that the manager takes as a reference, understanding that, during the The last two summers, life in the shelters was conditioned by a health crisis that made any type of activity difficult in them.
a summer of music
“If I had to define the summer, I would say that it is being very musical,” the manager assured LA VERDAD and explains the initiatives that are being developed in this area. In July, the ONCE Foundation, which has carried out eleven camps this year throughout Spain, chose Coy for one of them. It dealt with performing arts and the participants worked on the realization of a children’s musical, representing the residents of the district on the last day of coexistence.
The organization of urban art, theater and dance workshops helps to attract new visitors to these accommodations
Music was also very present in the Casa Iglesias hostel. Its facilities hosted, in the last days of June, the Musicolor festival, organized by the Musical Association of La Alberca (Murcia). During their stay, dozens of participants, aged between 10 and 18, prepared a musical show. Days later, the Culebrina hostel hosted a joint initiative between El Molino and the Lorca Albanta Music Academy: Campus Rock, designed for children between the ages of 8 and 15 to enhance their creativity and socialise.
“But there has not only been music, there has also been urban art and dance,” says Abellaneda. After the ONCE Foundation passed through the Casa Grande hostel, twenty young people from different parts of Spain settled in their rooms in the Mosaic Art-Street Art program. Before the arrival of Educnatur at the Calnegre hostel, it became to repeat in this former Civil Guard barracks, for the second consecutive year, the Summer Dance Camp, an urban dance summer camp organized by a school in Talavera de la Reina.
The director of El Molino recalls that the shelters are not only designed for large camps, but also as a meeting space for different associations or groups. Thus, for example, the City Council of Mazarrón, which has reserved the Casa Iglesias hostel for the whole of August, organizes between the 22nd and 26th days of coexistence for young people from the municipality between 13 and 16 years of age.
On the other hand, among other groups, the Casa Grande was attended this summer by the residents’ association of La Hoya, who spend several days in its facilities every year. “People need to know that shelters are also a resource for these services,” concludes Abellaneda.
