The Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin expressed the hope that Russian athletes will take part in the next Olympics and World Championships in 2023 under the flag of their native country, and at the awarding of medals they will hear the national anthem of the Russian Federation. The head of the national sports department said this in an interview with Izvestia.
“We are doing everything necessary for this. This is a task that we have to solve together by the end of this year, by December 17,” Matytsin said.
He recalled that authorized persons had already visited the country and checked the Russian anti-doping system, including administrative measures to counter the use of prohibited substances.
“Of course, we will believe that the next Olympic Games and World Championships in 2023 will be held with the participation of our team under the flag and the anthem will sound more than once in sports arenas,” the Minister of Sports stressed.
Recall that our athletes have been competing at the World Championships, the Olympic and Paralympic Games under neutral symbols since the beginning of 2021. In the fall of 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Commission of Inquiry accused the Russian side of editing the electronic database of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory, which could contain information about violations of anti-doping rules by athletes.
In December 2019, the WADA Executive Committee confirmed the findings of the commission and deprived the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) of compliance status for four years, which meant the absence of the country’s flag and anthem at the main international competitions within the above period.
In December 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne considered RUSADA’s appeal and reduced the ban to two years. The sanctions are valid until December 17, 2022.
The next Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in the summer of 2024 in Paris.
