The central government plans to grant new functions to the Mossos d’Esquadra in ports and airports. According to La Vanguardia, the Catalan police will gain citizen security powers in these infrastructures that until now fell to the National Police and the Civil Guard.
The Ministry of the Interior and the Generalitat will sign the agreement at a Security Meeting that will in principle be held on December 5, and which will be attended by President Salvador Illa. The transfer of powers is similar to the one sealed in July by the Basque government by Fernando Grande-Marlaska’s ministry for the Ertzaintza.
The transfer of powers does not imply that the National Police and Civil Guard will withdraw from ports and airports, since they will retain the functions of immigration, border control and smuggling. The novelty is that the Mossos d’Esquadra will be the ones who will assume the tasks of preventing and combating crime in both precincts, as well as everything that has to do with traffic.
The decision had been on the table for months, and in fact it was one of the issues that had to be brought to the Security Board scheduled for last March. However, when Pere Aragonès called elections, Marlaska decided to cancel them.
