The head of Kazakhstan Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government with Prime Minister Smailov
On Monday, February 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev dismissed the country's government. According to information on the website of the head of the republic, the ministers will fulfill their duties until the approval of the new government.
“In accordance with Article 70 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I decide: (…) Accept the resignation of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the message says.
At the moment, nothing is known about the reasons for Tokayev’s decision. It is noted that the decree comes into force from the date of signing.
The President will appoint an interim Prime Minister of the country
According to the document, the acting Prime Minister of Kazakhstan appointed Roman Sklyar. Previously, he served as First Deputy Prime Minister.
Before Sklyar, the government of Kazakhstan was headed by Alikhan Smailov. The president appointed him to the post of head of the cabinet of ministers after mass protests in 2022 and reappointed him in March 2023 after elections to the lower house of parliament.

On March 30, deputies of the Mazhilis (lower house of parliament) approved Smailov’s candidacy. Then she was supported by 82 parliamentarians. The day before, on March 29, the government of the republic, headed by Smailov, resigned amid the election of a new lower house of parliament.
Elections of chamber deputies took place on March 19. The largest party, Amanat, won 62 of the 98 seats. The parties “Auyl” (eight seats), Respublica and “Ak Zhol” (six seats respectively) also entered parliament. In addition, members of the People's Party of Kazakhstan and the National Social Democratic Party received seats.
In September, the president staged a massive reshuffle in the Cabinet of Ministers
At the beginning of September 2023, Tokayev arranged massive reshuffles in the country's Cabinet. As a result, some government members changed positions, and some of them lost their jobs.
As part of the reshuffle, Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Marat Karabaev was appointed head of the Ministry of Transport, and Tokayev appointed Arman Shakkaliev as Minister of Trade. Ermek Marzhikpayev was appointed head of the Ministry of Tourism, and Aida Balaeva was appointed Minister of Culture and Information.
In addition, a new head has been appointed to the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Yerzhan Sadenov, a former deputy head of the department, who headed the military commandant’s office in Astana during the protests in Kazakhstan.
Tokayev announced radical reforms
On January 19, it became known that reforms would begin “very soon” in Kazakhstan that would make the country’s economy more stable, transparent and dynamic, Tokayev promised.
In addition, the president announced the creation of an investment climate that meets the highest world standards. According to him, plans to double the size of the economy by 2029 require large-scale reforms.
In addition, Tokayev planned to hold an extended government meeting, at which the results of the socio-economic development of the republic for 2023 will be summed up. It will pass after the resignation of the government – on Wednesday, February 7. During the meeting, according to the press service of the country's president, the main tasks for the coming period will be outlined.
