Parents and unions denounce that Education thus shows its “commitment to the private network to the detriment of the public one, which is the majority”
The regional government yesterday endorsed the proposal of the Minister of Education so that the presidency of the School Council of the Region remains in the hands of one of the most prominent representatives of private education, the until now president of the Association of Private Education Centers of the Region of Murcia (Cece), José Francisco Parra. The decision has unleashed complaints and discomfort among a large part of the educational community, which sees in the appointment “further evidence of the regional government’s commitment to concerted education, to the detriment of public education, which enrolls 70% of students Murcia”, in the words of the president of the Federation of Parents of Students Associations (FAPA), Marisa Maldonado.
José Francisco Parra presides over one of the three private and concerted education employer associations in the Region. The entity that presides over, Cece, together with the Union of Educational Cooperatives of the Region (Ucoerm) and Catholic Schools of Murcia, represents concerted education in the School Council of the Region, the organ of participation of all the social sectors involved in the general programming of the teaching of non-university levels of the Region of Murcia, of consultation and advice. The unions and directors’ associations are concerned about the fact that precisely this course the School Council has a prominent role, since it is issuing the opinions of the Lomloe development decrees.
Both the FAPA and the Association of Primary School Directors yesterday showed their discomfort with the election, since they consider that Parra cannot provide “a broad vision of public education because he does not know it.”
The participation body will have a prominent role with its opinions on the Lomloe development decrees
The Workers’ Commissions union denounced that Parra’s appointment “is one more gesture in the strategy of dismantling public education, part of a plan drawn up to divert public resources to private education,” denounced the general secretary of the Federation of Education of CC OO, Nacho Tornel, who regretted that the rest of the unions did not speak out against the appointment in the plenary session of the School Council. The Sidi union announced that its representative in the Regional School Council, who is also the president of the Teaching Staff Board, will not attend any more meetings of the Regional School Council, and expressed its “total rejection” of the appointment.
Parra will replace Juana Mulero, who resigned last July to return to her profession as a teacher and researcher.
