The Colombian tennis player Maria Fernanda Herazo seeks to reach the quarterfinals of the W25 in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) this Thursday. The Barranquilla woman faces the sixth seed of the tournament, the Spanish Carlota Martínez Cirez.
On her way to this stage, Herazo left behind the Chilean Daniela Seguel and the Belgian Sofia Costoulas, ninth seeded. But in her first match of the tournament, she presented a huge gesture of fair play in favor of the Colombian.
María Fernanda herself was in charge of praising her rival and telling the story on her social networks. What happened? This is how the Colombian woman told it:
“In the second set, in my second matchpoint opportunity at 30-40 with Daniela's service, the chair umpire mistakenly signaled that my ball had been out and determined that it was 40-40, so the game was practically over. new open for either of the two,” explained Herazo.
“At that moment Daniela spontaneously told the judge that the ball had been good and the game was over. even though she could have not said anything and continued with the process of the match that was closed and in which either of the two could have taken the score at the end,” he added.
In the end, Herazo won 6-4 and 6-2 and with that he managed to advance to the second round, but not before thanking his rival for the gesture of fair play.
The thanks of María Fernanda Herazo
“This has never happened to me in a professional match and I don't know what I would have done in the same situation. “Today I want to publicly recognize with this story that great sportsmanship of Daniela,” she said.
“I have realized, once again, what a good person Daniela is, and that she has very well earned the affection of all the people in Chile and in the world who support the famous panther Seguel every day,” he insisted.
This was the fourth confrontation between Seguel and Herazo and the third victory for the Colombian, who had already beaten her in the 2017 Bolivarian Games and in a tournament in Paraguay in 2018, due to the Chilean's retirement.
Seguel, on the other hand, left the Barranquilla woman on the road at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
