The initiative includes actions to adapt the elderly to the urban environment, improve their socio-health situation and give them social participation
The first action plan prepared by the Cartagena City Council to adapt the city to the needs of the elderly includes 123 improvement proposals grouped into three major areas of action and must be developed until 2025, according to municipal forecasts. The program, presented yesterday, includes a monitoring and control system to guarantee that the marked actions are carried out.
The final objective of the First Action Plan ‘Cartagena Friendly City for the Elderly’ is to adapt the city to all generations, work for active and healthy aging and meet the needs and demands of the elderly population to improve their quality of life.
Its implementation allows all municipal management areas to include the perspective of older people in their projects and activities. Employees of most of the departments have been part of the working groups that have prepared the document and will participate in its monitoring and evaluation together with social entities and groups for the elderly.
The 123 actions are grouped into three main lines of action: urban environment, social environment and participation. These three categories include all the areas proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), such as outdoor spaces, buildings, transportation, housing, social services, health, respect and social inclusion, communication, social support and participation.
The urban environment includes actions to improve outdoor spaces, buildings and homes, or transportation. Among other proposals, the plan establishes to increase the service of the assisted bathroom; enable public toilets and design adequate equipment. It is proposed to improve accessibility in public buildings, increase adapted transport and improve the visibility of screens and posters in services.

The socio-health environment includes 46 actions related to respect and social inclusion, services, as well as access to and information on the resources offered. Some proposals have already been launched during the drafting of the plan, such as work on the detection of loneliness in the elderly. It anticipates the increase in home care and the importance of training the elderly in digital culture and telematic procedures.
The area of participation includes 31 actions, among which is the creation of participation bodies such as work groups, a council for the elderly and the strengthening of the network of associations and volunteering. This section also includes proposals for leisure, physical activity and digital training.
