The Cuban Ministry of Health announced the registration of the first case of monkeypox in the country on Saturday, after confirming that an Italian tourist was in “critical” condition.
The ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television that the patient, who arrived in Cuba on Monday and was taken to hospital three days later, is “in critical condition and his life is in danger.”
She added that the patient’s condition worsened after he felt unwell on Wednesday, and by Thursday he was transferred to the hospital “to receive intensive treatment, where he suffered a heart attack from which he recovered.”
The ministry indicated that the tourist stayed in a rented house and “visited several places in the western provinces of the country”, without specifying his age or any other details.
The ministry confirmed that it will impose measures to deal with monkeypox.
