Is this the beginning of the end for a legendary off-road brand, or the beginning of an exciting new era? Carlos Tavares, head of Stellantis, has revealed plans for the first all-electric Jeep, which will go on sale next year. The electric Jeep will fit between the Renegade and Compass in terms of size.
The brand does not go into much detail, so we have to make do with two photos of the electric Jeep, which will probably be based on the CMP platform of parent company Stellantis. The Peugeot e-2008 and the Opel Mokka are on the same platform. These cars have a 50 kWh battery in the bottom, good for a range of more than 300 kilometers.
Jeep lags behind its group mates
While other Stellantis brands such as Citroën, Opel, Fiat and Peugeot already offer electric models, there are currently only plug-in hybrid versions of the Renegade, Compass and even the iconic Wrangler. That plug Wrangler works better than you might expect, and it’s even the best-selling PHEV in America right now.
Can the electric Jeep go off-road?
We’re curious to see how Jeep can put a good off-road twist on the CMP platform — and if it’s going to come with four-wheel drive at all. We don’t think so, but that doesn’t matter much for the intended target group, we guess. It may be said: it will in any case not be the appearance. Expect minor adjustments before the electric Jeep can go into production.
