European Union (EU) countries will this week discuss the possibility of creating their own military mission in the Red Sea. This was announced on January 8 by the representative of the head of the EU diplomatic service, Josep Borrell, Peter Stano.
“High Representative Borrell will present a proposal to launch a separate EU military mission in the Red Sea,” he told reporters.
According to Stano, discussion of this measure will take place towards the end of the week.
Earlier, on January 7, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that due to attacks by the rebel Yemeni Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement in the Red Sea, the interests of more than 40 countries were affected and almost 20% of global shipping was disrupted.
Prior to this, on January 4, the Russian permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, condemned the attacks on civilian ships in the Red Sea and called for their end. He called the current situation a direct projection of what is happening in the Gaza Strip.
On January 2, Ansar Allah supporters launched two cruise missiles at a US warship in the Red Sea, but missed.
Yemen's Houthis have begun attacking ships in the Red Sea they say are linked to Israel, amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.
