In the event of an open conflict with Moscow, the supply of Russian natural gas, which accounts for 40% of the entire supply of the European Union, is in danger
The European Union yesterday sealed an alliance with the United States to guarantee the supply of natural gas in the event that the escalation of tension with Russia explodes in Ukraine. Through this agreement, the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the US president, Joe Biden, have set themselves the goal of guaranteeing the “progressive integration” of this country in the gas and electricity markets of the continent.
In the event of an open conflict with Moscow, the supply of Russian natural gas, which accounts for 40% of the entire supply of the European Union, is in danger. The support of the USA represents one more way in the energy diversification of Europe, which is also developing new technologies to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
In the joint statement published yesterday, both leaders stated that they work “together” to provide natural gas and avoid “supply cuts” in the EU, “including those that could result from a Russian invasion of Ukraine.” The pact reached reinforces the commitment of the two allies to “intensify their cooperation” and achieve a “reliable and affordable” energy supply for European citizens.
What’s more, Washington pointed out that it is already working with governments and operators to provide additional volumes of natural gas to Europe. In fact, last week, the North American country was already studying the possibility of Qatar exporting liquefied natural gas to the EU, in case the situation in Kiev worsens.
The two allies also called on major energy-producing countries to join them in ensuring that world energy markets “are stable and well-supplied. The EU and the US will hold new talks at the Energy Council that will meet on February 7 and in which they will also discuss the “mutual commitment” to accelerate the green transition and achieve the environmental objectives of the Paris Agreement.
