The Road Naming Committee in the Emirate of Dubai announced a new mechanism for naming the emirate’s roads, with unique names that reflect the spirit of authenticity, cultural heritage, and future direction of the Emirate of Dubai, and relies on linking names with numbers to internal roads, with the aim of making access to them easy and quick, within the framework of its commitment to highlighting the identity. The national patriotism of the UAE and the Emirate of Dubai, reflecting its history, legacy, supreme values, and cultural, civilizational, and social richness.
Director General of Dubai Municipality, Chairman of the Road Naming Committee in the Emirate of Dubai, Dawoud Al Hajri, confirmed that the committee relied in applying the methodology for choosing the new names for the emirate’s roads on the mechanisms and standards of Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021 regarding the Road Naming Committee in the Emirate of Dubai.
He said that the committee developed an advanced methodology for naming roads in line with the development and distinction of the city of Dubai, and based on its position as a model for the best cities in the world. The methodology took into account the controls and standards of naming mechanisms, the nature and characteristics of the emirate, its history, its cultural and civilizational heritage, and its future direction, and to highlight the high-value achievements that have been achieved. And celebrating public figures who have an integral role in the development process, whether at the state or emirate level.”
The first phase of naming roads began in Al Khawaneej 2, where the names of the new streets included names inspired by local trees, plants and flowers, such as; Al Ghaf Street, one of the most famous types of local trees, will connect the first and second Al Khawaneej areas, in addition to other names such as Sidr, Al Rayhan, Al Faghi, Al Samar, and Al Sharish.
The new names will contribute to highlighting the national identity and cultural heritage of Dubai, and will also be linked for the first time to land uses and developmental projects for each sector and region.
In naming roads, the committee mainly relies on the principle of inference, by finding a methodology that enables a person to relate to the mental image of the place, through linking it with the names, paintings, and details of the site.
According to the new methodology, the road name will represent the most important part of the components of the new address through the road signs, which will add a distinct and unique character. The new addressing mechanism will also facilitate reaching the intended destinations more smoothly and conveniently.
The “Road Naming Committee in the Emirate of Dubai” works to achieve the principle of participation by providing the public with the opportunity to propose names that are appropriate to the nature of the areas and their uses. In the coming stages, work will be done to involve community members in the process of proposing new names for roads in the emirate within the areas that the committee will announce. In naming it.
It is noteworthy that the “Road Naming Committee in the Emirate of Dubai” was formed by Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021, headed by the Director General of Dubai Municipality and with the membership of a representative from the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the Roads and Transport Authority, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Center for the Revival of Heritage, and four representatives. Citizens of the Emirate of Dubai who have experience and expertise, chosen by the Chairman of the Committee.
