FIFA and the magazine France Football They awarded the award jointly between 2010 and 2015, but there was a separation for 2016. From there, there are The Best Award and the Ballon d’Or, as previously happened with the FIFA World Player (1991-2009) .
We see the main differences between both awards, which aim to reward the best of each season in different categories:
In both cases, two phases are chosen, but with certain differences. In the award given by FIFA, a committee of experts performs the first screening, leaving the list of candidates at ten. It is then when, with a 25% weighting, the votes of a journalist for each country, Internet fans, team captains and their respective selectors decide who is the winner.
On the other hand, in the Ballon d’Or, it is France Football magazine itself that announces the 30 candidates to obtain the award in the first phase. In the second, an international jury made up of a journalist from each country awards 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points to five members of said list.
The Best Award values the performance shown on the grass, in addition to the behavior on and off the court. On the other hand, the Ballon d’Or takes into account, in this order of importance, individual and collective performances, talent and fair play or the career that each nominee has had. In the event of a tie, France Football makes a second round among those who have equalized votes.
The Best Award recognizes the performance of the best male and female players, best on the men’s and women’s football benches, best under the sticks in both cases, best fans and the FIFPro World11 forming the best line-up also in both cases. It also awards the best goal of the season with the Puskás Trophy.
For its part, the Ballon d’Or awards the best player, the best footballer under 21 years of age in the Kopa Trophy and the best goalkeeper in the Yashin Trophy.
Curiously, both trophies are 31 centimeters high, but the Ballon d’Or weighs 800 grams more (7.2 kilograms), for the 6.4 of The Best Award.
The Ballon d’Or is generally awarded in Paris, although at the time when FIFA and France Football joined forces, the gala was held in Zurich. Precisely in this Swiss city the first edition of The Best was delivered, which later traveled to London (2017 and 2018) and Milan (2019), being telematics in 2020.
The winners have coincided in all the editions where there have been them: Cristiano Ronaldo (2016 and 2017), Luka Modric (2018) and Lionel Messi (2019). In 2020 there was no Ballon d’Or because the award was left void due to the impact of COVID-19, while FIFA awarded Robert Lewandowski. On January 17 we will know if Lionel Messi maintains the coincidences or, on the contrary, if The Best Award does not coincide with the French criteria.
