The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has imposed sanctions for traffic violations, on a voluntary and executive basis, for a positive alcohol rate for a total amount of 22,968,205.36 euros in 2023compared to 23,393,661.70 euros the previous year.
This has been made known by the Government in a written parliamentary response to a question asked by the Vox Parliamentary Group in Congress, where it recalls that traffic sanctions are established by norm with the rank of law and, in that sense, the Cortes Generales hold and exercise the legislative power of the State and, consequently, the modification of the sanctioning regime in matters of traffic.
“They cannot be subject to alteration by the Executivebut rather it is an attribution that falls to the Cortes Generales. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the purpose of the sanctions provided for does not have a collection purpose, but rather a disciplinary spirit of road traffic fundamentally linked to traffic safety and safeguarding the life and physical integrity of all road users, as well as to discourage drivers from engaging in risky behavior for their lives and the lives of other road users,” he clarified.
In the text, the Executive has highlighted that the most frequent concurrent factors of traffic accidents on interurban roads in 2023 “They were distracted driving, alcohol and speed”.
Regarding the measures to reduce the accident rate, he recalled that last April a shock plan was launched, the measures of which have been implemented since then. 150 new troops have been incorporated into the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard; 95 new fixed speed control points; and greater intensity in preventive alcohol and drug controls, especially on the highways and highways of the autonomous communities with the greatest increase in the number of fatalities, both with static patrols and dynamic patrols, including the use of unmarked vehicles, providing Pay special attention to the most dangerous sections and times of the day.
On the other hand, Traffic carries out an annual control and surveillance campaign to reduce the use of electronic devices and mobile phones while driving, among others. “Saying effort to control and monitor distractions In recent years it has been rewarded with a drop of almost seven points in its presence as a concurrent factor in fatal accidents on interurban roads, at least during the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023, going from 33 to 26%.
