They are essential to ensure legality and safety at the wheel
With the arrival of summer and vacation trips, thousands of Spaniards hit the road to go to their destinations and spend a few days away from the routine of their cities. Whether it is the beach, the mountains or some unknown place, car trips are almost obligatory, which is why they increase considerably. During the same time last year, it is estimated that displacement was around 4,750,000 and this year, with hardly any restrictions due to coronavirus, it is expected that they will increase to figures similar to those before the pandemic.
In the meantime, the fines and penalties at the wheel for committing an irregularity also rise, so it is advisable to be very alert and avoid unnecessary trouble. One of those that can happen due to oversight is forgetting certain documents at home that are essential on the road. If the security agents ask you for these papers and you do not have them with you, you can face significant sanctions.
These are the driver’s license, the ITV and the car insurance. The first of the three is something like a DNI that confirms that you are authorized to drive on Spanish roads. If you do not carry it with you while driving, the fine that can be imposed is 500 euros and the withdrawal of 4 points. In the event that you drive with the expired document, the sanction does not imply loss of points but does imply a fine of 200 euros.
In the case of the ITV, it must be updated, since driving with an invalid inspection carries a penalty of 200 euros. If you do not carry the circulation permit that reflects the status of the ITV, the fine amounts to 500 euros.
Finally, car insurance is the last essential document. It is the way to ensure that the vehicle can deal with any problem or accident that may occur, although the DGT estimates that 2.65 million circulate without insurance. Carrying out this reckless activity carries a fine of 800 euros if the car is parked and 1,500 euros if it is circulating. In the event that the uninsured vehicle suffers an accident, the driver will be fined 3,000 euros.
