The collapse of a suspension bridge in the Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday was one of the deadliest such accidents to shake the country in years.
In the following, some bridge collapse accidents during the past two decades have left at least 20 people dead or missing all over the world.
– At least 20,260 dead in Gujarat bridge collapse – At least 60 people were killed on Sunday when a suspension bridge collapsed in Morbi, the Indian state of Gujarat, dating back a hundred years.
– 2021
26 dead in Mexico City – In May 2021, an elevated section of a track in Mexico City’s metro system collapsed, crashing a commuter train, killing 26 people and injuring dozens.

43 killed in Genoa
In August 2018, 43 people were killed when a bridge collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa. The Morandi Bridge, part of a major highway linking France and Italy, collapsed in heavy rain in August, sending dozens of vehicles and their passengers into a cliff.
– 2016
26 dead in Kolkata – In 2016, a bridge collapse on a busy street in the eastern city of Kolkata killed at least 26 people. Rescuers pulled about 100 injured people from under huge concrete and metal slabs.
– 2011
In October 2011, at least 32 people were killed when a bridge that narrowed a crowd of revelers collapsed in northeastern India, about 30 km from the mountain town of Darjeeling.
Less than a week after that accident, about 30 people died when a pedestrian bridge collapsed over a river in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.
– 2007
In August 2007, at least 64 workers were killed when a river bridge in central China’s Hunan Province collapsed while construction was being completed.
In December of the same year, at least 16 people were killed and 25 missing in Nepal after a bridge crowded with pilgrims collapsed in the west of the country.
– 2006
August 2006 At least 40 people died in Pakistan after a bridge collapsed in Mardan, 50 km from Peshawar in the northwest of the country, due to heavy monsoon rains.
In December of the same year, at least 34 people were killed when a 150-year-old bridge collapsed on a passenger train at a railway station in the eastern state of Bihar.
– 2003
In August 2003, 20 people were killed in India, including 19 children, when a bridge collapsed into a river near Bombay, causing a school bus and four other vehicles to fall into the river.
In December of the same year, 29 people were killed in Bolivia after floods washed away a bridge while a bus was crossing it.
