Behavior Interactive, the Dead by Daylight studio announced the layoffs of nearly one hundred people. More precisely, it will leave 95 people at home, 70 of whom are active in the main Montreal office. The reason? The implementation of “structural changes” to pursue a “clearer vision”, which led to the decision made on jobs.
In the last five years Behavior has grown enormously, going from 575 to 1,300 employees, in order to try to chase the growth of the industry. Unfortunately, the industry’s unprecedented popularity has led to equally unprecedented competition. So now the studio wants to return to focusing on its strengths, those that have allowed it to grow in the past, including horror, instead of getting entangled in projects with dubious chances of success.
Who pays the bill
In short, as has happened in many other cases, Behavior has grown beyond measure during the pandemic period, driven by the unnatural success of the sector due to the confinement periods, and now has to deal with a normalized market, that is, one that has returned to its previous levels. As always, it will be the employees who pay.
Dead by Daylight is a popular horror-themed live service with asymmetric gameplay, in which a hunter chases four survivors to kill them in various ways, with the latter trying to escape from his clutches by hiding or taking advantage of the elements of the scenario. Considerable a great success, it is still widely played today, with peaks of players on Steam reaching over 50,000 units. Evidently they are not enough to support the tripling of employees.
