The Potes City Council faces the thirty-second edition of the Potes Pomace Festivaldeclared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and which will be celebrated from Friday the 8th to Sunday the 10th, with a view to promoting the necessary work for it to be declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, as proposed by the councilor, Javier Gómez, who has assured that “we have to fight together” the administrations.
This was stated this Thursday at the press conference together with the general director of Tourism and Hospitality of the Government of Cantabria, Gustavo Cubero, with whom he advanced the extensive programming that the new edition will have of the Orujo Festival, among which the awarding of the Alquitara de Oro to the Best Orujo of the Year and the proclamation of Mayor Orujero, which this year will go to the Cantabrian journalist and presenter Quico Taronjí, stand out.
PERFORMANCES
Both have announced the details of this new edition of the Orujo Festival that will fill the Lebanese capital with activity throughout the weekend, with different folklore, musical, recreational, cultural and gastronomic performances.
Cubero has stated that this party “goes beyond pomace”highlighting that it brings together thousands of people attracted by Liébana every year on the second weekend of November, “the setting in which this festival is celebrated is incomparable.” Likewise, he stated that in the Orujo Festival “all the gastronomic and cultural traditions of Liébana and Potes converge”, it is “an ode to folklore, to the gastronomy of Liébana and to the know-how that is transmitted between generations.” The general director of Tourism and Hospitality has encouraged people to attend this celebration in which a “great ambassador of Cantabria” such as Quico Taronjí will be proclaimed as Mayor Orujero.
TRADITIONS
For his part, the mayor has encouraged those attending this event to “enjoy the company, the traditions and the unique space that is the Lebaniega region.” After describing each of the activities that make up this year’s program, Gómez has raised the possibility that this festival could achieve the designation of Festival of International Tourist Interest, “an objective for which we have to fight together.”
Gómez has announced that at the party Six pomace producers from the region will participate: Horehound, El Coterón, Sierra del Oso, Picos de Cabariezo, Martínez de Cos and Mariano Camacho. In this sense, he has highlighted the economic importance of being the winner of the Alquitara de oro, “since it represents a boost to sales that begins to be noticed from the moment it is known since attendees usually purchase the winning pomace.”
The proclamation of Quico Taronjí as Senior Orujero will take place on Saturday, November 9 at 6:00 p.m., and the awarding of the Alquitara de Oro to the Best Orujo, on Sunday, November 10 at 12:30 p.m. In addition, Potes will host different musical, recreational, folkloric and cultural performances from Friday, November 8.
PROGRAMMING
On Friday, November 8, the party will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the opening of the Book Fair in the Jesús de Monasterio park. In the afternoon, at 5:00 p.m. and in this same space, a story-telling session will take place. At 7:00 p.m. the presentation of the book ‘Viviendo el orujo’ will take place at the Lebaniegos Studies Center, and the day will close at 9:00 p.m. with the ‘Equus’ parade. On Friday afternoon, the folklore demonstrations will begin and will continue throughout the three days, livening up the streets of Potes.
He Saturday, November 9At 12:30 p.m. the authorities will receive the Mayor Orujero, Quico Taronjí, at the Lebaniegos Studies Center. At 5:30 p.m. they will parade alongside the orujera companies, folk groups and gastronomic brotherhoods to the La Serna tent. Once there, at 6:00 p.m., Quico Taronjí will be officially proclaimed Orujero Mayor 2024 and will proceed to light the alquitara in the Town Hall booth. In addition, in the La Serna tent there will be folkloric performances at 6:30 p.m., a commented pomace tasting at 8:00 p.m. and, finally, at 9:00 p.m. the performance by the group ‘Lowe’ will take place.
He Sunday, November 10At 11:00 a.m. in the La Serna tent, craft and creative workshops will be given for the whole family by ‘Beatus Ille’ and, at 12:00 p.m., there will be a performance by the bagpipe band ‘Garabanduya’ . At 12:30 p.m., the jury’s decision will be announced and the prize will be awarded to the winner of the Alquitara de Oro of the Government of Cantabria for the Best Pomace of the Year. To close, at 1:00 p.m. the traditional tasting of borono with repinaldas will take place.
