To the surprise of many, there is more than one case where someone who has been declared dead wakes up moments later, surprising everyone who was already assimilating his passing.
This was the case of Li Xiufeng, a woman who was 95 years old at the time of the incident.
Li lived in a village in Guangxi, China, and because of her age and living alone, she was usually cared for by several neighbors. Chen Qingwang, for example, brought her breakfast almost daily.
However, and as reported by the British media ‘Daily Mirror’, on February 17, 2012, Qingwang found Li lying on her bed and despite shaking her body and calling her several times, she did not receive any response, so she approached check if the old woman was breathing.
“I tried to feel her breathing and found that she was gone, although her body was not cold yet,” the man told the ‘Daily Mirror’.

The funeral
Apparently Li had no children, so Wingwang arranged for his funeral together with his family. According to local traditions, the coffin was to be kept in the house for several days so that her friends and family could come and bid the deceased farewell.
From what the media reports, this tradition began on February 19 and, by decision of the man, the coffin was available to those who wanted to visit it until February 24, the day on which the burial would take place.
However, the man was in for a surprise when, one day before the funeral, he arrived at the old woman’s house to finish the preparations and he found the coffin open and without a body inside: “I was so terrified that I immediately asked the neighbors for help,” Qingwang said.

The surprise was even greater when they found the woman preparing something to eat in her own kitchen.
According to Qingwang’s recollection, Li only told them that he felt like he had slept for too long. “After waking up I felt very hungry and wanted to cook something to eat,” the woman said.
What really happened?
Apparently, it wasn’t about Li falling into a sudden sleep.
That same day that her neighbor went to bring her breakfast, the old woman would have hit her head hard, so she collapsed and lay motionless on her bed.
According to what a local doctor told the aforementioned medium, it is likely that Li suffered an “artificial death” in which, although the person does not appear to be breathing, the body remains warm and the organs are intact.
“Thanks to the local tradition of leaving the coffin in the house for several days, she was able to save herself” from, most likely, being buried alive. However, this tradition also says that the belongings of the deceased should be burned, so Li woke up with nothing.

Any medical explanation?
In medicine we speak of the term catalepsywhich refers to, according to the page specialized in medicine ‘Psychology and Mind’, when a person “suffers a paralysis of the body, along with hardening and tension of the muscles, being unable to carry out any type of movement”.
From what the same portal reports, this condition can last from a few minutes to a few weeks and that is where the problem is, because catalepsy causes the body to show no “obvious signs of life.”
In fact, due to cases like Li’s, some hospitals require that bodies not be released until 24 hours after death.
As for those who could present this, the page mentions that, although it is much more likely in cases where the person has “disorders such as severe diagnoses of schizophrenia and in some psychoses”, it has also occurred in completely healthy people.
However, it is less and less likely that a case will occur in which a person is believed to be dead when they are not, as technology has evolved and has allowed even aspects of catalepsy to be identified.
