For accident-free driving in conditions of snow and ice, there are a number of specific rules, which Alexey Ruzanov, technical director of the international network of car service centers FIT SERVICE, told Izvestia on January 9.
“First, when driving onto a snowy road, try to use the gas and brake pedals as smoothly as possible. In winter, we all try to drive with great attention, and during snowfalls we need to strengthen these principles even more. Perform all maneuvers slowly and carefully. “You probably can’t say it better than the saying, ‘if you drive more quietly, you’ll keep going,’” Ruzanov said.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that on modern cars you can select the “winter” or “eco” driving mode. They help improve directional stability and reduce slippage.
“The second important rule is distance. In conditions of reduced visibility or snow slush on the road, it is better to double the distance and avoid the risk of colliding with the bumper of the nearest car. It is important to remember about the lateral interval,” the auto expert noted.
According to him, a separate problem of winter roads is sills, ruts, and snowdrifts on the sides, which narrow the roadway and impair visibility.
“If there is a change on the road (low snowdrifts between lanes), and you plan to change lanes, drive onto the snow hill at low speed at an acute angle. Drive out smoothly as well. In general, when overtaking and changing lanes, do not turn the steering wheel at a large angle,” the specialist added.
Another piece of advice he gave in connection with decreased visibility during snowfall is to turn on not only the headlights, but also the low beams and fog lights. And when approaching an intersection, according to him, emergency lights will also be useful.
“If during snowfall and other winter weather you have the opportunity to completely refuse to travel by car, then this will be the best decision,” concluded Ruzanov.
On January 8, a massive accident occurred near Veliky Novgorod. According to the Telegram channel of the traffic police in the Novgorod region on the morning of January 9, the accident affected 66 vehicles. A criminal case has been opened.
On the dashcam camera you can see that the accident began with one of the cars skidding, after which a chain reaction began – due to bad weather, the cars were unable to brake on the slippery road. Drivers said the snowstorm made visibility difficult.
The victims were four people, including a girl born in 1993 and her one-year-old child, indicated the head of the traffic police department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Novgorod region, Viktor Gavrilov. As the press service of the Russian Ministry of Health clarified, 17 people were injured in the accident. Three of them were hospitalized.
On January 9, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that traffic on the M-11 highway had been restored after a massive accident.
