Mexico City.- The “militarization of spending” reached its highest point in 25 years and the Armed Forces currently control almost three quarters of the spending of security agencies, according to an analysis by Mexico Evalúa.
Today, the Secretariats of National Defense (Sedena) and Navy (Semar) control 72 percent of the spending of security agencies, while at the end of 2018 they controlled 53 percent, the analysis center stated.
In the first half of the year, military entities managed 3.6 percent of total programmable spending, the largest proportion since 2000, the organization said.
“Spending on public security entities increased by 47.4 percent. In figures: 51.8 billion pesos, reaching 161.1 billion pesos, its highest historical level for a half-year,” he said.
The largest increase was seen in Sedena, whose expenditure amounted to 81.9 billion pesos, a real increase of 69.6 percent (33.6 billion) compared to the previous year. Likewise, the Navy increased its expenditures by 46.4 percent (10.9 billion).
“This caused military entities (Sedena and Semar) to have an increase of 62 percent (44.6 billion pesos) in their execution of resources compared to 2023. In contrast, civil entities, such as the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSyPC) and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) increased their spending by only 19 percent (7.2 billion),” explained México Evalúa.
