The Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory has sent a letter to the Government to ask that sanction the Catholic Church to celebrate masses “for the soul of Franco” in “numerous cities” in Spain this November 20, which marks 49 years since the death of the dictator Francisco Franco.
“The Catholic Church protects and celebrates the existence of thousands of victims of the dictator who continue missing in ditches and mountains without their families having received the slightest access to justice from the democratic State, forty-nine years after the dictator’s death,” the association denounces in its letter.
The association criticizes that the Spanish State “remains passive” while masses are celebrated that “offend and humiliate the victims of the Franco dictatorship”, and considers that if the masses were celebrated in honor of a terrorist “justice would act ex officio.”
Therefore, it requests that the Government sanction the Catholic Church not only with the fines provided for in the Democratic Memory Law for exalting the protagonists of the dictatorship in public places, but also with other measures such as removal of the box that allows you to donate money to this institution in the income tax return.
The group that has released the list of masses is the Spanish Catholic Movementwho does not organize the masses but is in charge of spreading the calls for his followers to attend. In Madrid, the Twelve Apostles Parish hosts the mass organized by the Francisco Franco National Foundation. As you have been able to verify Publicthe Madrid parish has been the scene of several Franco celebrations in recent years.
