He PSOE celebrates its Federal Congress next weekend in Seville. A political document will emerge from the socialist conclave that will serve as a basis for the coming years. The framework presentation was presented a couple of weeks ago and from there the socialist groups and federations have presented their amendments, which will have to be voted on in the Andalusian city.
Among the issues that have recently generated internal confrontations in the socialist ranks are feminist currents. When it was being processed trans law There were certain sectors that were against the law promoted by the Ministry of Equality then held by Unidas Podemos, led by Irene Montero. The PSOE ended up assuming gender self-determination.
The echoes of those tensions have now been reflected again in the amendments document presented, which includes all the proposals. Several groups expressly ask to eliminate the references, included in the framework presentation, to the acronyms LGTBIQ+ or LGBTI+. The objective is to replace these acronyms with LGTBI, as approved in the 40th Federal Congress in 2021.
The acronym “Q” refers to people “queer”, which refers to those people who reject all types of hegemonic classifications of the binary system male/female, heterosexuality/homosexuality. The acronym “+” includes groups that are not represented in the previous acronyms. Identities such as fluid gender or non-binary people would be included, as well as other sexual orientations such as pansexuality or asexuality.
From diverse groupingswhich go from Cádiz to Asturias, passing through Madrid, Cáceres, Mallorca, A Coruña, Jaén, Bizkaia or the PSC, among others, it is requested to eliminate from all paragraphs in which the acronym LGTBIQ+ appears and replace it with the acronym LGTBI, as approved in the 40th Federal Congress.
Some of the amendments go beyond that reference and argue that the letter Q and the + sign must be eliminated “because of its misogynistic, ultra-liberal and anti-feminist meaning.”
On the contrary, there are amendments, such as those of Socialist Youth (JSE), that do include another denomination. Specifically, they ask to unify the criteria for calling the group LGTBI+.
Sources from the socialist leadership recognize the different positions on the matter but emphasize that they trust in reaching an agreement so that the final reference remains LGTBI+. Their main argument for this is that this is what it is officially called in the General Directorate dedicated to these matters and dependent on the Ministry of Equality, now in the hands of the PSOE through Ana Redondo. It is called “General Directorate for Real and Effective Equality of LGTBI+ People”, as it appears on the Ministry of Equality’s own website.
