The call occurred just before the derailment of the Angrois train, according to what he told during the trial
The Renfe controller who had a 100-second telephone conversation with the driver, Francisco José Garzón, just before the derailment of the Alvia train in July 2013, Antonio Martín Marugán, has stated that he made that call at that time because he was “relaxed” and had “nothing to do.”
In addition, he has defended that one of his functions was to seek the “comfort” of the passengers and that hence the call to the driver –to comment on what the arrival at Pontedeume station would be like, where a family would get off– and he added that it was the driver who could decide whether to respond or not.
Likewise, he stressed that he was unaware of the existence of the A Grandeira curve and “the danger” of that section, in which it was necessary to reduce from about 200 to 80 kilometers per hour.
