A great sporting achievement that risked being ruined. At the half marathon of the European Athletics Championships in Rome, Pietro Riva caught up with the German Amanal Petros, who until then had been second behind the other Italian, the elusive Yeman Crippa, who was on his way to winning the gold. Riva, overtaking the German, made an unsportsmanlike gesture, a “bye bye” with his hand before crossing the finish line and taking second position. Behavior that could have had important consequences, i.e. disqualification. The International Federation only sanctioned the Italian with an official warning. Speaking to Sky Sport, the athlete wanted to give his own version of what happened, apologizing to Petros: “I only did that with my hand. It wasn’t aimed at him, who I respect a lot. I said I’ll pay him a pizza or five kilos of Nutella, it wasn’t meant to be a gesture of disrespect towards him and the German athletes.”
