Dhat is a story of a rock, liquor and flags. And it’s a story of how two states peacefully resolve a decades-long dispute over a border. Denmark and Canada just did that, and so the two countries now share a new land border on a rock in the Arctic. “This is really a historic day,” said Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod. In fact, it’s about more than just one rock.
The rock in the Arctic has the shape of a kidney, is almost 1.3 square kilometers in size and is called: Hans. Named after the Greenlandic Arctic explorer Hans Hendrik, who participated in several Arctic expeditions in the 19th century. There is actually nothing to get on the rock, there are no people living on Hans, no wild animals, and there are no raw materials either. But it should be very windy there.
