He government of Mexico blocked access to 13 anti-drug agents from the United States to the country, being the last claim made by the DEA to Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“We have been waiting eight months for a visa and we know the cost that means to us in terms of our ability to work,” said the director of the agency, in a competition in the House of Representatives, Anne Milgram.
Likewise, Milgram added that “time matters,” insisting on the seriousness of the opioid crisis in the United States. USAstating that cooperation with the authorities has not been very “constant.”
These statements only make the tensions existing between the anti-narcotics force and the president of Mexico, after AMLO assured that he is a victim of the “black campaign” promoted by said organization.
During this week, Anne Milgram attended a meeting with representatives of the Appropriations Committee and the House Commerce, Justice and Science subcommittees low to justify its budget request for the DEA in the following fiscal year, from September 29, 2024 to September 27, 2025.
“Cooperation has been inconsistent and we need much more,” said the official about Mexico. “Cities, suburbs, rural communities, tribal areas have not been spared from this tragedy. “Fentanyl is killing all Americans.”
For this reason, Milgram insisted that two criminal organizations in Mexico, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, are the main sources of synthetic drugs consumed in the United States, and that according to official data in 2022 it ended the life of 108 thousand inhabitants in said country.
Meanwhile, Republican Hal Rogers, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, launched several criticisms against the Justice Department and the FBInoting that the DEA was not getting the help it needs from the Joe Biden Administrationso that Mexico’s cooperation is promoted.
“When the DEA faces obstacles such as complications in ensuring visas are delivered on time for agents operating in Mexico and there are outstanding arrest warrants that the Mexican government has not acted on, it suggests that our relationship with Mexico is far from to be the ideal,” is indicated in an official statement.
“It is disturbing that the director of the DEA, despite her efforts, has not been able to hold a single meeting with a Mexican government official since taking office,” Rogers explained.
López Obrador’s thinking says that the DEA had crossed several red lines, and as a consequence began to limit spaces for cooperation with the anti-narcotics agency.
Regarding work permits for DEA agents, the Mexican territory has appealed since 2021 to a principle of reciprocity, that is, if the United States plans to put 12 agents in Mexico, 12 Mexican agents must be fully authorized to operate in the country North American.
It must be remembered that in recent months, López Obrador attacked the agency, accusing it of pursuing a series of journalistic publications that link him, his family and people in his close circle to criminal groups.
Such statements have not been formalized, beyond what has been shown in the media through leaks, but according to AMLO, it is “slander” and nothing more.
