At 1 a.m. Dutch time, the light will turn green for the first time in 2022 in an official race weekend. After a few minutes, the light turns red again. When Esteban Ocon drives down the straight in his Alpine, his sidepod blows off the car, leaving a huge mess of carbon fiber on the track. They have to clean up the marshals before the session can continue.
When the debris is gone, there are 40 minutes left on the clock. Despite the winter testing that took place at this track last week, the teams are still exploring the track for most of this practice. The lap times are still a lot lower than the fastest time from the winter test and we see many different drivers at the top of the lap time board.
At the end of the training, Pierre Gasly is the fastest driver in the AlphaTauri. Behind it are the Ferraris of Leclerc and Sainz. However, the Ferraris did their laps on the slower medium tires, as did Max Verstappen. The Dutchman ends with the fifth fastest time behind George Russell’s Mercedes. In particular, it seems that the teams are not yet showing their full potential. We will have to wait for the other practices and qualifying to find out who is really the fastest.
