Teacher in Milan, student in Sicily: “I commute”
Teacher in Milan from Monday to Thursday, student in Sicily on the weekend: this is the incredible story of Alessandra Parello, a 30-year-old originally from Favara, in the province of Agrigento.
His story is told by Corriere della Sera. Alessandra Parello is a support teacher who works in Cinisello Balsamo, at least until Thursday when she then takes a plane to return to Sicily, precisely to Enna, to attend a specialization for support teachers in the universities of Milan, but also in Bergamo , there was no room.
“I moved to Cinisello 9 years ago. I worked on the common place, but since last year I have dedicated myself to support and I have understood that this is my path. However, looking at the announcements from the Milanese universities, I was overcome by discouragement: it is very difficult to get in, I know colleagues who have been waiting for years and I didn’t want to pause my life for much longer” said the 30-year-old.
Hence the choice to commute: “My choice is heavy, from a physical and mental point of view, and expensive. But it’s worth it to have stability, both professionally and for my students: I thought of their happy eyes when they reach a goal. And I no longer had any doubts. In 2022 I took the tests, I was deemed suitable but not among the top 240. I therefore had to wait another year.”
Alessandra Parello then talks about her rhythms and the costs that all this entails: “I study after dinner and in any spare time. I look for flights that cost less. Now the average for a round trip is 100-120 euros, multiplied by 4 times a month. In September it was double. The bus to Orio costs 12 euros, the one to Malpensa 10. For Linate I use the metro. For the bus from Catania to Favara it’s another 14 euros.”
All with a salary of 1300 euros, while the rent costs her 750 euros. An expense, the latter, that “my parents take care of. I was the first to leave for Milan. Then, over the years, they too found work here. Without economic stability I cannot go and live alone.”
