In recent days, some have been circulating on the internet, particularly on X pornographic photos of the singer Taylor Swift made with theartificial intelligence and initially published in a Telegram group dedicated to celebrities. They are therefore deepfakes, but made so well that it is very difficult to distinguish them from real photos.
Naturally the case aroused enormous outcry, given the name involved, so much so as to inflame the debate around the use of generative artificial intelligence, with Microsoft who intervened on the topic by fielding none other than the CEO Satya Nadella, who said he was worried about the situation, i.e. the proliferation of images of celebrities created without consent. After all, Microsoft is the first investor in OpenAI, a leading company in the generative AI sector, so it knows that billion-dollar lawsuits could arise from cases like this. In particular, the sexual nature of the images makes them particularly problematic from this point of view.
Worrying cases
Nadella touched on the topic in an interview with NBC Nightly News, in which he explained what measures will be taken to limit certain inconveniences. The full interview will be available starting January 30th. Meanwhile, an excerpt has been published:
Nadella: “I would say two things. First, I would like to go back to what I think is our responsibility, which is all the bumpers with which to protect the technology so that safer content is produced. There is a lot to do in this sense and a lot it's already being done. And we can do a lot, especially when law enforcement, law enforcement and technology platforms can work together. I think we can control the situation a lot more than we think.”
On the Taylor Swift case, Nadella said that he considers it terrible and worrying and that something must be done. We'll see how. At the moment it seems very unlikely that you will be able to put a stop to it fakes and scams created using artificial intelligence, with users appearing to always be one step ahead of censorship and protection systems. There are already several lawsuits filed against the companies that manage the most famous AIs. It will be difficult to stop them, given the billions at stake, but we hope at least that they will be regulated.
