A Taliban delegation will meet on Tuesday with representatives of the European Union (EU) in Doha, said Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, after his first meeting with US envoys.
Afghans have already met with representatives of the German government and a British parliamentarian, Muttaqi said during an event organized at the Center for Conflicts and Humanitarian Studies in Qatar.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will meet with EU representatives. We had positive meetings with representatives from other countries,” said the minister in Doha, the capital of Qatar. “We want to have a positive relationship with everyone. We believe in balanced international relations. We believe that these balanced relations can save Afghanistan from instability,” he added.
The meeting will take place in Doha and will also feature US representatives, said EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali. “This is an informal exchange, at a technical level. It does not constitute an acknowledgment of the ‘interim government’”, he pointed out.
According to the spokeswoman, the meeting should “allow the United States and Europeans to discuss issues” such as freedom of movement for people who want to leave Afghanistan, access to humanitarian aid, women’s rights or preventing the country becomes a sanctuary for terrorist groups.
The EU seeks to prevent a “collapse” of the Central Asian country, explained the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, as he left a ministerial meeting. “We cannot be content with watching and waiting. We have to act, and quickly.”
This weekend, US officials met with Taliban representatives in Qatar to talk about security and human rights in Afghanistan, the State Department said.
The Taliban are seeking international recognition and help to avert a humanitarian disaster after returning to power in Afghanistan in August after the withdrawal of US troops and after 20 years of conflict.
