The successes in Indianapolis
In almost seven full seasons in Formula 1 between 2002 and 2008, Takuma Sato he achieved eighth place in the final standings with BAR in 2004, establishing the highest result ever achieved by a Japanese driver in the Circus. The 47-year-old's name, however, is more closely linked to IndyCar. Not for the championships won, a feat he had never achieved in his career, but for the successes in Indianapolis 500. Sato, in fact, is part of the list of those who have lifted one of the most coveted trophies at an international level on more than one occasion, more precisely in 2017 and 2020here too the only Japanese to drink the traditional bottle of milk reserved for the winner.
The return
For the 2024 edition, the fifteenth of his career in the United States, Sato will compete on the Indianapolis oval no longer with Chip Ganassi, but with the team Rahal Letterman Laniganwith which he lifted the Borg-Warner Trophy in 2020: “I am absolutely thrilled to return to the 108th Indy 500 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing – he has declared – Many thanks to Bobby Rahal, Mike Lanigan, David Letterman and the entire organization for this incredible opportunity. Gratitude overflows, as I will be driving car no. 75 with primary sponsorship from AMADA. My journey with RLL has lasted over a decade, marked by mutual successes, and being back with the team fills me with immense excitement. I hope to find familiar faces again and make new alliances. I can't wait to get to work.”
A participation that was not at all obvious for Sato, who until the team's official announcement seemed distant from the possibility of being able to take to the track in Indianapolis, with the event scheduled for May 26th. Finally, last year's spectacular edition, won by Josef Newgarden on Penske, should be remembered.
