As Ukraine registers Russian attacks in several cities, the Taiwanese Air Force issued an alert for the presence of nine Chinese aircraft in its air defense zone on Thursday (24), according to the Taiwan Ministry of Defense. For fear of similar action by China, the crisis in Eastern Europe has been closely watched in Taipei.
Although the planes do not come close enough to the country, which China claims as its own territory, Taiwan has complained about the regularity of these Chinese missions over the past two years. The number of vehicles involved is still far from the last major incursion – marked by the presence of 39 aircraft on January 23 – and these actions have been more sporadic.
Taiwanese fighter jets were deployed to alert Chinese aircraft and air defense missiles were deployed to “monitor activities”, the ministry said, using standard wording for how Taiwan describes its response.
Although Taipei has not reported any unusual movements by Chinese forces, the government has raised its alert level because of the war in Ukraine.
